Expozine International Independent Publishing Festival

friend/shapes friend/scapes is a collaborative chapbook by Hannah Polinski & Laura Mota-Juang.

The book began as a writing exercise between Laura and myself. As we are both poets and photographers, we exchanged ten photos each that we had taken before becoming friends. We wrote poems based on what we thought the other person was doing, thinking, and feeling when clicking the shutter button.

What results is an exploration of personal experience and its retelling, blurring the lines between myth and memory. In this process the poems took shape in the gap of what is known and unknown of each other's past lives, taking license to mold and merge our stories.

The first edition was printed in fall 2024 for Expozine. The second edition was published in spring 2025 for the official launch party held at Osmo x Marusan. For the launch, Laura and I read poems from the book while two contemporary dancers interpreted our words through movement.

The chapbook was nominated for an Expozine award for English literature.
